Howlers Inn was a solid five stars and a highlight of the trip. They had wolves. We stayed in the Wotan room, with wolves just outside the window. You wake up and see them, hear them howling while you get ready, and eat breakfast on the deck overlooking them. The sanctuary started in 1993.

What it doesn’t have is bears.

After breakfast we drove about three miles to Montana Grizzly Encounter, where we spent an hour watching Max the bear and chatting with Wyatt, the guide.

Lunch at Backcountry Burger Bar was cheese curds, a bison burger, and a MAP Party lager. We walked around Bozeman and did some light shopping, including buying the journal these notes came from.

Then we visited the Museum of the Rockies. They do dinosaur research here, and the bones were excellent: T. rex, Triceratops, raptors, and Big Al. The exhibits were really well presented. They love their science.

A second exhibit explored mythical creatures and their origins, including how rearranging a mammoth skeleton could produce a giant Cyclops. One display was called “A Giant’s Leg or Just a Giant Leg?”

After a quick stroll around a cemetery, we had dinner at Revelry. The huckleberry lemonade was nice. Then it was back to the B&B for some casual wolf watching before bed.

The shopping totals: 14 stickers and four T-shirts. We were getting into it.
