Pacific Northwest, Day 3: Zoo, Cider, and Dinner at St. Jack

comments edit

We started at the Oregon Zoo. The animal roll call was long: black bear, bald eagle, comb-over condor, red panda, utterly playful otters, elephants, lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), chimpanzees, penguins, goats, house cats, long-necked giraffes, and a couple of “nope nope nopes.” Lunch was fried potatoes called papas verdes at the zoo. Quite tasty.

After buying all the bear shirts from the gift shop—and being called out for it by the clerk—we drove to a vintage/antique shop across the river called Urbanite. Clothes and housewares were procured. We stopped at Schilling Cider House so Ksenia could get a flight of cider and I could get tots. Later, we waited off my wife’s buzz by going to Jacobsen Salt Co.. Many little jars of salt and honey came home with us.

Dinner at St. Jack: Ksenia had cider, foie gras, and ramp-and-asparagus pasta with peas. I had cocktails, oysters, and bone marrow. The bone marrow was rather oily. Dessert was Salt & Straw ice cream: lavender and honey for Ksenia; “Berries, Beans, and BBQ Sauce” for me, with raspberry sorbet, baked-bean ganache, and strawberry BBQ sauce. Then drinks at Breakside Brewery.
