Pacific Northwest, Day 1: Portland, Books, and Doughnuts

comments edit

We landed in Portland and picked up our rental car. At The Inn at Northrup Station we dropped our bags, then took the train into the center of the city.

Lunch at Lardo: Ksenia had a pork meatball bánh mì and a lavender-honey cider. I had the Sancho, a brisket grilled-cheese sandwich, and a honey beer. At Powell’s City of Books, Ksenia browsed animal books while I headed for computer programming, science, engineering, and electronics. We did not have to lug all the books back: shipping was an option.

Blue Star Donuts supplied an O.G. for Ksenia and a raspberry-rosemary doughnut for me. On the long walk back, we stopped at Safeway for snacks, including a Marionberry cider from Incline Cider and Deschutes Fresh Haze IPA. We each had a can on the rooftop deck of the hotel. It had been a long day, from 4 a.m. Eastern to 9 p.m. Pacific.
