Europe, Day 8: St. Stephen’s, Café Hawelka, and Loos Bar
We climbed into the crypts at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Some of the stained glass had survived; the rest was less pretty than Cologne’s cathedral. At Mozarthaus, three floors covered Mozart’s life, history, and music, including one floor of his actual apartment.
A light lunch at Café Hawelka brought espresso that was okay but still coffee, a very good radler, and apple strudel that was warm, tangy, and maybe the best yet. Ksenia had iced coffee with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate powder. When I asked for a menu, the waiter said, “I am the menu!”
At Meierei im Stadtpark, we had beef tartare and roasted short ribs. The ribs were drier than I expected; the sour cherry tart was good. At Loos American Bar, I had an English Blackthorn and a De Rigueur; Ksenia had a Pussy Foot.
