We spent today on the thermal features instead of an early wildlife tour. At Fountain Paint Pot, we saw the paint pots, Red Spouter, Fountain Geyser, and Jet Geyser. Jet went off as we walked by. Celestine Spring, too. No Ernest.
Then it was over to Midway Geyser Basin for Excelsior Crater, Opal Spring, and Grand Prismatic Spring. Excelsior was big and steamy. Grand Prismatic was so colorful. And so windy.
The view from ground level gives you an idea of what you’re looking at, but the hike to the overlook is worth it. We walked about 1.6 miles in an hour, and seeing the spring from above made the difference. The wind picked up to more than 26 mph while we were up there.
We skipped lunch and went back to Three Bear Restaurant for dinner. Ksenia had a bison burger; I had the bison short ribs. Huckleberry ice cream for dessert.
Part of our June 2024 Yellowstone and Grand Teton trip. Trip summary.
