Pacific Northwest, Day 6: Mount St. Helens to Olympia
We drove for hours to Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount St. Helens. It was about 40°F, but warm in the sun and cold in the breeze. Low clouds moved off after a few minutes and gave us great views. We hiked around the volcano for about an hour. We learned about the 1980 eruption, the mountain’s enormous north-side bulge, and how quickly plant and tree life started to return.
We checked into our B&B in Olympia, then went across the road to La Petite Maison for dinner. Ksenia had a Moscow Mule, pork belly confit, and duck confit. I had French onion soup and steak; we also had a crème brûlée. The soup earned a star in my notebook.
