Poland, Day 4: Wawel, Kazimierz, and the Black Duck
We went back to Wawel, but the castle line was too long, so we went into the cathedral instead. I climbed the bell tower—narrow climb—and saw the tombs of Kościuszko, Mickiewicz, Piłsudski, and a lot of Polish kings. Polish crêpes for lunch, the museum above the Cloth Hall, then tea at Jama Michalika, the home of the Green Balloon cabaret.
Our Jewish Quarter tour took us through the Old Synagogue, Temple Synagogue, and the Jewish Community Centre. We stopped at Singer Café, where a table was dedicated to dancing. One of the women in the group broke her finger, which was not on the itinerary. We also went to Podgórze and Ghetto Heroes Square. The “ghetto” from Schindler’s List wasn’t the real ghetto.
At The Black Duck I had salmon tartare and Old Polish duck with red cabbage. Ksenia had duck in port with Silesian dumplings.
