London 2015, Day 6: Bletchley Park

comments edit

We took the train to Bletchley Park. A kind ticket seller gave us a two-for-one coupon. Inside were so many Enigma machines, a reconstructed Bombe, and the story of the young women who operated it. The work involved banks of Enigmas running in parallel; there was plenty about Alan Turing too.

We also went to The National Museum of Computing and saw the Harwell Dekatron Computer, the oldest original working digital computer. It first ran in 1951, served at Harwell until 1957, then was used for teaching into the 1970s. The five tape readers and Dekatron tubes held my attention long enough for a sketch in the notebook.
